P3D Dunkley Effect
- From: boris@xxxxxxxxxxxx (Boris Starosta)

Well, I went to see the site _http://members.aol.com/kendunkley/_ to check
out the Dunkley effect. I was amazed! There is indeed an easy way to
perceive "depth" in ordinary photos. However, I also observed several
limitations, which lead me to propose the mechanism.
First of all, color in the photo appears to affect depth most strongly,
with red object moving towards you in the scene, and bluer ones back. This
would help to make scenics appear quite real, as the infinite sky is blue.
But if you are unlucky enough to have strong red objects behind blue ones,
the image will appear pseudo in those areas.
Surprisingly, the effect is descernible in B+W photos as well, though not
as strongly. With brighter objects appearing closer, I think.
I propose that the effect is created by differential chromatic aberration
caused by the glancing view through pinholes. Red colors appear more (or
less?) shifted than Blue, and the way you are instructed to hold the
pinholes, makes the aberration go in opposite directions for each eye.
Also, the effect is strongest further away from the picture, because the
aberration, which is slight (a slight angular value), would have a greater
effect as the apparent image is more distant and smaller.
Respectfully submitted,
