P3D Publication of P3D archives

  • From: fj834@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx (Dr. George A. Themelis)
  • Subject: P3D Publication of P3D archives

I had been involved in an incident in the past (details found in the
archives) where one of my postings was reprinted in a club newsletter
without my notification or permission.

This poses a problem for me, for a number of reasons:

Most postings here are prompted by other postings. Taking something out of
the context of the general discussion can create problems. The nature of
this list is closer to informal verbal discussions than written
publications. Emphasis is in communication and speedy exchange of ideas,
while spelling, grammar, and, occasionally, good manners, take second place.
This is different than published material. I would spend considerably more
time composing an article or letter for our newsletter, Stereo World, or
any other publication.

Had I been notified of the intention to publish my posting, I would have
altered a few lines (which in retrospect sounded a bit too aggressive) and
made the text more in line with a written publication. I consider this a
matter of good manners and not a legal issue. I have no problem
distributing my postings in the same environment that were presented.

Perhaps we should include a statement in the CD ROM that all the material
contained in the disk are for personal use and no parts of it should be
distributed or reprinted.

Other than this fine point, I like the idea and would like to see the P3D
archives in the disk.

John R. made some similar points when he wrote the text quoted below, which
finds me in full agreement.

>I would consider it inappropriate for someone to take a quote out
>of context so it would appear that I was saying something I did not intend
>to say, and it would probably be inappropriate for someone to publish a
>"collected works of John Roberts" without previously checking with me, since
>it was not my intention in my posts that they all be gathered together
>outside of the context of the ongoing discussion on the mailing list.

>But everything in the previous paragraph could probably be considered a
>matter of good net etiquette. Perhaps if some sort of request from the
>list management (along those general lines) could be put on the disc,
>the person would be willing to withdraw their objection. I consider P3D to
>have a very positive effect on the promotion of 3D, which in turn benefits
>most of its readership, so in general we ought to be happy for P3D to be
>read as widely as possible, as long as the material is not abused.
