I was not joking when I said that travel (or other non-studio) shots may
take just as much effort as studio work. I do consider travel costs as
part of the effort to get a good shot, just like preparing the studio is
part of the effort, not just pressing the shutter release. Also, as you
started to indicate, effort alone does not equal good art. Some of my best
illustrations were knocked out in an afternoon, where ones that took days
and weeks to produce have ended up failures. The reverse is just as true.
I think the most interesting photography can in part be defined by its
uniqueness. Either it is unique because of artistic composition, or it is
unique because of the subject matter. That may depend on a unique
location, or unique action, or even common locations or actions seen in a
unique way. The best photography may fulfill several of these ideals.
I actually have nature photography in my plans for the spring. I've been
reading Edward Weston's daybooks, and his writings are an inspiration to
me. The books were recommended to me by a friend, who apparently
understands my vision better than I do - because it turns out I agree with
almost everything Weston has had to say about photography.
