It should, if the camera is constructed/calibrated properly.

This is what I do. And I don't just hope that focus is OK in close
ups but I check it too. And it is OK in the Realists that I have
checked.
I personally feel better knowing that the infinity focusing is
correctly adjusted. Perhaps it is phychological... but I have
been caught focusing the Realist at infinity. This was discussed
some time back. If my main object is rather far away then I will
focus at infinity which is where the minute details can be usually
found in the picture. When I use twin SLRs most of the time I have
them focused at infinity. The only exception is when using longer
lenses.
