Hi Michalo!

You can check some elementary things like is the shutter working, is the
film advancing, etc.?  Standard test is to put the shutter speed to 1
second and hear how it sounds.  You can also check if the rangefinder is
aligned, but it is not a big deal if it is not (which is usually the case).

Some problems, especially related to film advance, focusing, light leaks,
etc., are better tested with film.

Since you are not familiar with the camera, I think the safest thing to do
is ask for a 2 week return privilege.  Then load the camera with slide film
and experiment with different pictures, including, if possible, using
flash.  Evaluate the results and decide if the camera has a serious problem
or not.

I usually just check the shutter, take a quick look at the lenses and I am
done.  Chances are that the camera is working fine and only minor things
(if anything) need adjustment.

There are plenty competent Realist repairmen.  Service might cost from $50
and up.  Ron Zakowski is considered the top authority in Realist repairs
since he worked at the Realist factory since he was 15 years old and bought
most repair tools and parts when David White closed the stereo camera
division.  Ron retired from David White a few months ago and now
(theoretically :-)) he has even more time for Realist repairs.  For full
service he charges something like $168.50 :-) but he does an excellent job,
replaces many parts and he gives 2 year warranty (I believe).
