There is an Excel spreadsheet called MAOFD
(Maximum Allowable On Film Deviation). For
any given near and far distance and lens FL
it will calculate the maximum stereo base
that will not exceed the MAOFD (1.3 mm for
35mm AFAIR).
It's one an FTP site somewhere but I keep
losing the address. Perhaps someone (John B.?)
will supply it.

The 1 in 30 rule works well for scenes
that include infinity. For indoor shots
I don't know of a simple rule of thumb.
