P3D Vice Presidential Stereography

I spent the morning covering VP Al Gore's visit to Columbus Georgia. I
have a press pass from the Columbus Times, and I sometimes cover special
events for them- VIPs. golf tournaments and military related events. Of
course I always carry some stereo equipment with me, so I can make a few
for myself.
I took a Canon A-1, loaded with color film, for my newspaper pictures
and took a Realist and a Revere, both loaded, naturally, with Black &
White film, with me. It was interesting going through the Secret Service
Checkpoint as apparently they had never seen or heard of a stereo camera.
I had to unload both my stereo cameras so they could check them out, and
had to give them a demonstration of how both shutters work at the same
time. the film plane focussing system and the fact that the lenses don't
rotate. Had a nice little stereo discussion and to show them what the
stereographs look like, I showed them one I made of Tipper Gore about a
year ago, along with a lorgnette viewer so they could view it. That
seemed to please them no end and I was allowed to proceed without further
discussion.
I covered his arrival at Fort Benning and made some good stereographs (I
think) of him working the crowd. His main effort during this visit was
to see the new computer classes at Columbus State University.
Unfortunately the press was not allowed to birddog that part of the
visit. I think there were some great stereo possibilities there. He
gave a speech in the gymnasium, but the press was kept in the back of
the room, which was a bit far for the stereo effect available from a
Realist. About halfway thru his speech the young lady in charge of the
press asked if I wanted to go up near the front and off to the side and I
jumped at the chance. I made several profile stereographs of him while
he was talking.
I feel sure that I got something good out of the three rolls of film that
I shot. If not, I still had a good time and perhaps educated the Secret
Service on stereography and it's related equipment.
