No cutting and/or threading is necessary.  There are direct replacement
halogen bulbs available for the TDC 116/117.  Thre great advantage of the
halogen bulbs is that the glass does not darken as the bulbs age -- typical of
old-fashioned incandescents -- losing up to a stop of light before the lamps
burn out.  The halogens also last a good deal longer than the old tungstens.
