P3D Stereo Photography Mini-Course

Hi!

We just finished our two days of mini-courses here at
St. Matthew Lutheran School in Pittsburgh. It was a chance
for kids in grades 1-8 to sign up and get 1 1/2 to 3 hours
of instruction in something that interested them:
CPR, tie dying, hot air balloons (!)--you name it--
and stereo photography!

I taught three sections of stereo photography with four
kids in two and three kids in the other. My thanks to
Boris Starosta, Walter Osadciw, and Harry Poster for
the excellent stuff on their Web sites. We looked at
that and did some simple hands-on stuff like measuring
interocular distance. Then I showed them a series of
3X5 and 4X6 prints, using a Loreo viewer (the big one).
The viewing was topped off with Kodachrome 200 beamsplitter
pairs in a Tach-lite viewer (thanks again, George!).
Then we went outside to do some cha-cha pairs with
single-use cameras (Kodak and Fuji). I will cut and tape
the pairs for them and each will get one of the small
lorgnette viewers from Reel 3-D. They will also be able
to use this to view the stereo pairs that will be in
our yearbook. (We'll sell viewers to others that are
interested.)

The kids ranged from third through eighth grade and it
was fascinating to watch their response to the various
items and concepts. The highlight of the series was
yesterday when one of them decided he wanted a picture
of the medical chopper at nearby Allegheny University
hospital. We arrived at the gate, scant yards away
from the helicopter, just as it was revving up for
a flight, and he snapped his pair. They were so excited!
