P3D Re: Competitions suppressing creativity?
Let me clarify my position in this issue...
I hear compaints about "them" (clubs, competitions, judges etc.) that
suppress creatitivity, etc. I ask, who are "them"? It is not "them",
it is "we". We, the stereo community.
Is there problem that too many scenics or flowers get high scores?
Is it true that competitions are promoting postcard quality, cute and
easy to swallow photographs?
Maybe... So, what are we going to do about it?
One idea for clubs is to adopt what the Detroit and Cleveland clubs
have done: Have competitions with a specific assignment. This way
it is impossible for people to keep on working succesfully around
the same subject.
Here is a list from this year's assignments in Detroit:
- Government
- Wood
- Sky Things
- Bridges
- Contemporary
- Though the Window
- Winter
Every year new challenges pop up. Anyone who only thinks flowers or
good scenics, has no chance in Detroit!
I have to go now and pick a few good slides for "Through the Window"
which is tomorrow!

PS. PSA Salons even though they are generally "open", they usually do
have specific categories for medals, like the famous by now
"Contemporary" which encourages creative work.
