>I did not see what projector Dr. T >recommended in response
to someone's question as to the best 35mm projectors for Stereo.

I recommend two KODAK>EKTAGRAPHIC IIIA (or IIIAM) projectors
with "FF" flatfield KODAK lenses. Flatfield lenses have WHITE
lettering on the end of the lens barrel, whereas "C" CURVED FIELD
lenses have BLUE lettering on the ends of the barrel, and can only
focus either the center OR the edges (not both) of glass-mounted
slides ( and of glassless slides which do not "POP" into a convex shape
when heated, as was and is the case with the OLDER EKTAGRAPHIC
and CAROUSEL projectors, which I recommend you AVOID purchasing. )
EKTAGRAPHIC III projectors are so cool that glassless slides will
NOT pop into the convex shape requiring "C" lenses, so the "FF"" lenses
are the best whether you have glassless or glassed mounts

All EKTAGRAPHIC projectors have a side-ramming mechanism which
positions each slide perfectly in the gate every time, so NO horizontal
or
vertical adjustments are needed if your slides are correctly mounted, and
you can go FORWARD and BACKWARD repeatedly for ANIMATION.
CAROUSEL projectors DO NOT align slides precisely in the gate, so that
even correctly-mounted slides must be adjusted, and "ANIMATION" is not
possible. BE AWARE that the side-ramming mechanism in some of the
OLDER (discontinued) EKTAPRAPHIC projectors (which you can only
buy used) is so strong that it can bend and pop apart cardboard mounts,
 causing jams.

The "A" or "AM" stands for automatic focus, which you can turn "ON" or
"OFF" (for soft focus slides. In my eight EKTAGRAPHIC IIIA projectors
the automatic focus works perfectly, after you focus the first slide,
even with
a tray of varied mounts, a mixture of cardboard, thin plastic, thicker
GEPE
and WESSPLASTIC mounts. As the glass in slide mounts varies in thickness,
even with all GEPE mounts, you really need automatic focus, especially
with
the magnification of larger images or projection at greater distance (
Such as
at 52 feet at NSA Conventions). If you buy EKTAGRAPHIC IIIA projectors
used,
check out the automatic focus before you buy, as many used projectors
have
had heavy usage as rentals or in corporate Audio Visual departments, and
were sold only because the infra-red sensor in the automatic focus
mechanism needs to be repaired or replaced, which may be costly.

New EKTAGRAPHIC projectors usually come with standard EXR lamps.
I recommend the brighter " EXW-5" lamps, which are not quite as bright
as the "EXW", but are longer lasting. The "EXW" lamps are rated at
17 hours, and I had one burn out in 30 minutes at NSA-San Diego. As
"EXW" lamps burn at their top voltage, they have NO VOLTAGE reserve
when a SPIKE of higher voltage comes down the line, as when some
other projector or other appliance on the same line is turned off. As
the "EXW-5" lamps are burning at a lower voltage than their rating, they
have
a voltage reserve, AND I HAVE NEVER HAD ONE BURN OUT, even after
more than 100 hours of projection.

I recommend internal BRACKETT>Polarizers (available from BRACKETT
ENGINEERING), which clamp on the EKTAGRAPHIC III condensing lens,
where they stay cool from the internal fan, they stay clean (no tendency
to
collect small particles floating in the air), and where they block about

one-third of the heat from reaching your slides, thus keeping the slides

cooler.

However, slides which have a mylar backing, such as POLAROID Black
and White instant slides, or slides with KODALITH masks or titles will
depolarize light, causing "ghosting" or double images, in which case you
must hang polarizers over the lenses. I recommend Reel 3-D Enterprises
for these polarizers.

Enough for now. More later on lenses and lamps. Hope this helps.

the left images projector stacked over the right images
>projector. They can be purchased new from some New York
mail-order stores advertised (In photo magazines and SHUTTERBUG)
for as little as>about $325 each, with KODAK 3-Year warranty (The
Warranty is on the back page of the Instruction Manual that comes
in the box with each projector. One store may try to charge $15 extra

for the warranty. DO NOT PAY IT. Use a credit card, and DISPUTE any
extra charge over the advertised price, )and of course
less if purchased secondhand. Some used EKTAGRAPHIC IIIA (or AM)
projectors need repair or replacement of the INFRA-RED SENSOR which
operates the AUTOMATIC FOCUS, so check out the AUTOMATIC FOCUS before you
buy, as replacing it may be expensive As they
register
>each slide perfectly in the gate and have automatic focus, no
adjustments are
>needed for correctly mounted slides in GENE or WESSPLASTIC mounts.

Thanks, good to know
