I think competition in most all fields is a prime motive for innovation,
however that said, it motivates in the direction that success is expressed.
For example, in Olympic skating innovation is toward things that will bring
higher scores (or hopes that it would). In business, it's toward that which
the customer base provides substantial monetary feedback.
In the case of 3D competitions, it'd promote innovation in directions that
higher scores/acceptances will occur (so long as such innovations do
indeed cause such feedback to occur).

I think that's a good idea too. Perhaps each "rule" could have it's own
competition where the entrants are to try and make the broken-rule "work" for
the images. Like having a "psuedo competition". Some rules may not
have *any* "acceptable" results (winner gets a "3" on a scale of 1 to 10),
but the techniques attempted might be interesting, even if not liked.
