Another thing that's worth mentioning every month or two (because there are
so many new readers of P3D) is that there has been a very deliberate effort,
starting at the creation of P3D and continuing to the present, to keep this
a "kinder, gentler" mailing list, with much higher standards for courtesy
than Usenet or many other mailing lists.

If you compare the end results, I'd say it's worked very well in this format.
It's true that our debates sometimes get a little "high spirited", but
there's very little in the way of actual flames or personal attacks. That
benefits our technical discussions for at least two reasons:
 - If the participants don't get too angry with one another, they're more
willing to share what they know and more willing to listen, and useful
solutions can be reached more quickly.
 - In many cases if tempers start to rise, it turns out to have been a
misunderstanding of terminology, a misreading of a post, etc. Or the
person making the "offending" post may be willing to restate their
position in a way that the others can live with. So a calmer approach
can clear up misunderstandings more quickly, and avoid all the additional
   traffic a flame war causes.

A final point - many people get P3D in digest form, and most people reply
to each message in chronological order as they come to it, so it's inevitable
that a list this big will have a certain amount of "inertia", and multiple
replies to a given post. Since this topic came up on a weekend, expect
numerous comments on Monday. :-)
