Andrea says "the tricky part is knowing how much to move between exposures."
Not so......
[Forget about calculating 30 to 1 ratios.]
Some years ago a local stereographer named Stan Baird built a slide bar which
does this automatically. It employs any standard 2D camera. The one I have is
about 18" long. It is really two bars connected at one end by a bearing
allowing the top bar to pivot over the bottom by a precise amount,
approximately 2 degrees. The bottom attaches to your tripod, while the top has
the camera attached. The camera can be moved along the bar to achieve any
desired magnification. Regardless of where the camera is placed along the bar,
the angular displacement is always the same. It does not, however, calculate
the exposure due to bellows extension. There is also no difference whether you
take right or left first except to remember not to move the lights between
exposures. Also the subject is situated near the end of the bar near the pivot
point.
There is a fellow in West Los Angeles who has some of these if anyone is
interested.
