Did I sound that ratty?  Sorry, I just meant to make sure that nobody
misunderstood.  It's a *very* common misconception.

John Roberts commented on the existance of a lossless JPEG mode.  Yes,
there is one, but it is rarely implemented and it's far from state of the
art anyway.  On the web that means that few people will wait for the big
file to arrive, and then many of them can't view it.

I've heard tell of a more powerfull lossless compression algorithm in the
next revision of the JPEG spec, but when that will come about is anybody's
guess.

Hope we've got it covered between us all now.
