P3D sd-3d
I've tracked the comments over the past week (longer than I had
anticipated) about the computer oriented 3d image list with great
interest. The general sense I've gotten is that some people would
prefer not to see the list split, but are fairly neutral, whereas
there are a few people who would *really* like to see the sub group.
It's a close call...
Bearing in mind that nothing is irreversible, I've gone ahead and
created sd-3d. If it indeed turns out to "suck off" too much discussion
from photo-3d or conversely gets very little activity, then it (and
the archives) can be merged back.
As far as the name is concerned, I'd actually created d3d, but decided
on sd-3d and went back and changed it for a couple of reasons. One
practical and one historic.
The practical side is that I wanted to include "stereoscopic" in the
name in an effort to keep the 3d-modellers from burying the list (outside
of actual stereo 3d-modeling). Hopefully any messages picked up by
search engines and/or web crawlers will emphasize that it's the
"Stereoscopic Digital 3D List".
The other reason is that for those of you who have been recently
added (like in the last 3 years), the history of photo-3d is
that it was started (what, 10 years
ago?) by Tom Neff, and then went dormant for awhile. It was revived
by John B at LBL, but during one of the periods when the Feds kicked
off all non-contractual computer uses from it's machines, I voluenteered
to sponsor it at ET. About the same time, I picked up the "San Diego
3D" mailing list, which was a small group mainly consisting of heavily
technical users (such as people using 3d imagery for x-rays, electron
microscopes, etc). Thus SD-3D was created, but eventually merged
into Photo-3d at the point when I stopped running the Adobe Photoshop
mailing list (which moved elsewhere) and took over photo-3d.
So there may still be links out on the net in places pointing to
SD-3D where it's concievable that people might follow them and eventually
end up with us.
Unfortunately, due to the length of the name, it means that there will
be a potential problem in maintaining the 8.3 format on file names
beyond digest #9999 (but that's awhile in the future :-) That's one
reason I went with sd-3d rather than digital-3d or something similar.
At the moment I've not worked up the charter or welcome message, but it's
open for business. As a general guideline, stuff posted there should
involve *specific* computer related topics as they relate to stereoscopic
imaging, although not necessarily directly in the same message. I'll be
moderating it myself (at least initially) to see how things go as far
as keeping things on track (or diverting them back to photo-3d/tech-3d/sell
-3d if necessary). Hopefully another moderator will be coming on board
before the end of school in 6 weeks or so. If after you subscribe (assuming
you are interested), a reasonable topic of conversation initially is
what the range of topics should include within the above guidelines.
Subscriptions will be in digest format by default, so if you want
ack delivery, you'll need to subscribe, and then reset the delivery method
via a set mail command after you are added.
Here's the usual info...
========================
standard subscribe instuctions:
(automated subscribe)
========================
Send an e-mail message to listserv@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx leaving the
SUBJECT line blank (or just fill in "xxx" if your mailer requires one).
(Note that there is no second "e" in "listserv")...
In the BODY of the message say something like
subscribe sd-3d George Lucas
or whatever is appropriate. You'll receive a confirmation message back
indicating that the subscription has been submitted to the moderators for
approval.
===========================================
To change your subscription delivery status, send to the robot address...
set sd-3d mail ack
or
set sd-3d mail digest
===========================================
To POST mail, send your your message to
sd-3d@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
===========================================
Let's see how it goes for awhile.
THANKS
