The half frame format seemed well-suited for close-up portraits, though.
I think the SLR thru-the-lens viewing would be a clear advantage in composing
and focusing, compared to other systems. Likewise, various close-up adapters
would make it more versatile than, say, the fixed MacroRealist focus.

been built to attach to the medium format Exakta bodies. Go ahead and shoot
120 film
in it and chop it down vertically to fit a normal frame, but you'd have gotten
Realist
format slides out of it easily. (With lots of room for window setting as
well!).
That's been one of my back-burner ideas for a long time (a medium format
version of
the hyponar). Had problems getting the right lenses at the time as I recall.
If I get
adventuresome, I might haul out the old 2 1/4 SLR and try hacking it up<

According to my trusty old Reel-3D camera guide reprint, there WAS
a medium format camera with just such an attachment (the Broncia?). My infacuation
w/ med. format stereo is well tempered by the fact that the 75mm standard lens
will give considerably less depth of field and would partially negate the perceived
advantage of a larger image size.
