P3D Detroit April Report
Another fun night in Detroit last night! Instead of program we had "Trade,
Shop & Swap"... There was not much to shop... but interesting chatting with
fellow club members.
Derek Gee is doing a great job as the President... being very comfortable
at the "stand" and skilled with the projector. Billy Turner, John Vala,
Martha Dombeck and all club officials are helping, making sure that the
meetings are a fun and learning experience.
"Winter" was the assignment of the slide competition. The highlight of the
evening was Paul Talbot's "Winter Getaway"... a nice resort in summer-like
weather... Everybody got a kick out of that, especially after seeing plenty
of snow and ice in other pictures... (as they say, "one person's winter is
another person's summer" :-)) The judges liked it and gave it a second
place... (two second places for Paul last night).
Dennis Hanser had his most impressive showing with two first and one second
place, a total of 17 out of a 18 maximum possible points. This is the best
anyone has ever done for a long time... With one competition left ("Open")
Dennis is 17 points from second place which means that it is mathematically
impossible to miss first place if he just shows up with 3 slides next month.
He will be the winner of the prestigious "Charles Helin Memorial Trophy for
Stereo Excellence", a well-deserved top honor in Detroit. This huge trophy,
a revolving award, is decorating my stereo room right now (I won it last
year)... Scribed on the sides are the names of all the people who won it,
year after year, since 1959.
Overall, another good year is approaching the end in Detroit. We still
have the Slide of the year competition and award, election of officers,
etc. Next year's assignments should be announced soon so we can all plan
our stereo shooting. I have a feeling that Dennis is in a row but with
Paul Talbot improving fast, Bob Chamberlain, Jim Green, yours truly, and
others, after him, it is going to be an interesting year...
