P3D slide conversion to computer question

I rec'd this email and would be grateful if some of you that have had
experience with the conversion share your experiences. I'll collect the
info and email this person with the info.
He wrote:
"I'd like to bring images from a 2000+ family stereo slide collection
into our computer.  I've tried the $80. transfer devices which result in
terrible quality reproduction.  Can you tell me if there is any
foolproof way to maximize the quality through some type of homemade
apparatus, perhaps using a high resolution flatbed scanner and some
optics to accomplish it?

Thank in advance for any advice, or if there is a publication or book on
this subject, I'd appreciate that information."
