P3D Stereo Realist/Flash/Leaf Shutter

I recently opened my realist to compare it with a friends damaged unit and we
discovered that the flash fires when the shutter is not all the way open. has any
one else noticed this? You can check it by removing the lensboard, cocking the
shutter, and sliding the thin metal strip near the base. the shutters open and
you can see when the flash makes contact. I assume this was to give bulbs a
little time to peak. Do you think you could get a little more flash if you
slightly bent the flash contact away from the metal strip, thus opening the
shutter 100% before exposure?
