P3D Re: aurora
|Thanks much for the warning. I went out last night at about midnight here in
Although the intensity is subsiding, there is still the possibility for
more visible aurora (as opposed to radio) tonight. Reports from last
night indicate visibility from as far south as between Boulder and
Ft. Collins, Colorado (north of Denver).
Guess what - we were socked in here by the passing "cold" front
(GRRRRR!). Ah well, there should be more events like this as we
ramp up on the solar max - expected now to peak in the spring, 2000.
The best place to look for current conditions (updated ever hour to
two hours) is
http://solar.uleth.ca/solar/www/aurora.html
(I find the bottommost map the most imformative).
To see current and recent ground based observations, check
http://solar.uleth.ca/solar/www/auroras.html
(note the "s" on "auroras" as opposed to the previous).
I've got my fingers crossed for tonight and the fastest color film
I can find loaded - so maybe I can get a stereo picture, even if it
doesn't have an extended baseline... (it occurred to me, being
relatively close to Yellowstone, that a picture of the aurora with
Old Faithful going off would be the picture of a lifetime - but the
technical requirements would be immense - probably needing a time
exposure to get the aurora fairly bright (and hence fuzzy) and a STRONG
flash to illuminate the geyser...)
Just a thought...
Thanks
