With proper layout, no one should have to hand correct anything. Poor
graphics design is hardly the fault of the markup language.

Again, if you can specify a font, you can specify one too small.

It sounds to me that your preference is based solely on unfortunate
experience. The mere existance, never mind the success of pdf (a
proprietary format) illustrates its superiority to HTML ( a widely used
standard).
And there are other options to NTML than PDF, just none as popular as
PDF.
There is no doubt that even an ASCII version without illustrations would
be of value. But if you can take the step to HTML, then going to PDF
should be carefully considered.
