P3D Flash and 3D

The problem with on-camera flash is that light falls off very quickly as
distance increases. (the inverse square law I think)
That's why backgrounds are often dark in flash pictures. If using an
adjustable camera it helps to use a slower shutter speed than you think
wise to bring up the ambient backround illumination. I will often shoot
a complete set of wedding portraits at 1/15 second hand held. Be
careful of camera holding technique. Don't jerk the shutter release.
To avoid the washed out look of subjects closer to the camera, try to
shoot when subjects are all about the same distance away. They will all
be illuminated more evenly. Of course this doesn't accentuate the
stereo effect but life is a compromise.
You lab should not be giving you prints with a highly washed out look.
Have them re-do the prints. Of course toning down the washed out
foreground subjects will also darken the backround unless you spring for
custom printing. It's easy to blame yourself or your camera for lousy
prints when the fault is often at the lab.
