Both the 283 and 285 have "4 auto f/stop settings"

True, but an optional lens kit was available for the 283 that did
pretty much the same thing.

Both the 283 & 285 have a guide rating of 120, so unless I missed
something, that means they have the same power.

Does anyone have any experience with modifying the foot of either
of these (the original plastic foot) for use with a Realist? Has
it caused any problems such as weakening it so that it cracks? If
it cracked did you repair it with glue or replace it? If
replaced, did you use a metal replacement (can you still use hot
shoe) or a Vivitar plastic replacement or a 3rd party
manufactured unit?
