Yeap, many people have discovered this phenomenon, especially when
working and viewing anaglyphs for hours on end. This is what I
mentioned in Photo-3D #1515.

As you mention you see the complementary color. This is quite like
the seeing afterimages. There is a classic example where the red,
white and blue (US star and stripes) flag is painted turquoise,
black and yellow. Staring at this strange colored flag for a few
seconds and then staring at a white wall will result in seeing the
flag in it's true colors! The trick is to stare on exactly one fixed
point on the flag or it won't be as effective. This is because you
have to "tire out" the cones in your eyes. There are other numerous
examples and probably quite a few on the net or you can make your
own.
P.S. If you want to discover some other freaky effects, try humming
a few bars to see them literally on your monitor! If you don't have
a good singing voice ;-), try eating some crunchy chips or hard
candy and look at your monitor.
