One of our club members, who is handy, introduced us to her giant screen
at the last meeting. Nobody measured the thing, but it was big. Several
of us donated thrift store screens to the project (these seem to be
rather more common than usual right now). She took four of them and
trimmed the edges that wound up in the middle and those on the bottom of
the top two, right down to the silver edge. She lapped these edges over
the remaining edges and glued the seems with fabric glue (the screens had
a fabric backing. Then she sewed the seams with a shiny silver thread,
using a needle meant for sewing plastic. She sealed the seams with a
camping equipment sealer compound. Finally we put four grommets across
the top and bottom and two on each side to allow for various mounting
schemes.
We hung it on the side of the house for an alfresco showing at the last
meeting and it worked great, very impressive.
While on the subject I'll say that I ran across a promising screen
material that I've been meaning to test. A holy regalia company sent me
a book of samples of cloth used in the making of mystical raiment. One
stood because of its silver sheen. It was identified only as 100% washed
acetate.
It looked like it might be a good screen material. I'll test it tonight
and let you know.
