I don't think that a person trying to improve his flash pictures with a
Loreo/Argus type camera at social gatherings is going to benefit much
from our discussion of umbrellas.  

The simple answer is to arrange people, or move the camera so that
people or objects are more or less equidistant from the camera.  

The results from an automated print processor will be much improved.

The use of fast film will tend to lighten the background if the ambient
light is substantial.
