P3D NSA Rooms at the Richmond Marriott.

I just thought that I would let Photo-3d in on a few
things about the room situation at the Richmond Marriott.
We originally reserved and had to guarantee payment
for 790 rooms. NSA had to make to commitment of $60,000
for the Marriott to reserve the convention space (10,000 sq ft
plus meeting and workshop rooms) for us. The next
time you sit next to a guy who is staying at the Motel 6 ask
yourself
how much less registration fees would be if everyone supported
the organization sponsoring (and making a substantial commitment)
to convention that we all love to attend. The more rooms you can
be assured of selling, the cheaper the room rate and convention fees
are for everyone. (Fortunately we have negotiated better deals for
1999 and 2000).
The Richmond committee invited NSA to Richmond, and
the Marriott was the only venue that would suitably hold us. After
Rochester,
the Board decided not to go to a town were there were not enough
people
to adequately run the convention without overworking anyone. Ask
Bill how
he liked having 6 jobs in Rochester. No I didn't forget Marty, Dick,
John
and WAD; but too much work was handled by too few people. We have a
fine
venue in Richmond; however, it is not a cheap one. Enjoy the luxury
this year.
Would anyone care to guess what our convention would cost if it were
held in
Washington, DC?
Back to Richmond stuff: The last report that I had indicated that
the rooms were about 63% booked, with the most
problems being on Wed and Thurs nights. Apparently
a lot of people are coming early this year to sight see and
room hop. Room reservations are far ahead of the convention
registrations.
Call the hotel directly for the best information regarding
room availability. I plan to call Dennis Flannery in
the Marriott sales office to see what the problem is.
The last time I called, I was able to get another 60
rooms.
