Desktop Holograms
What happens to your 3-D design when you try to print it? 3D COM
(www.3dhardcopy.com) has come up with an innovative process that creates
the illusion that printed images have a third dimension. Special software
creates a composite image from 36 perspectives, each with the image rotated
one-sixteenth of an inch. The printed image appears as a blur. But when you
place over it a clear piece of plastic with vertical ridges (a lenticular
lens), the blur turns into a hologram-like image. 3D COM offers a Web-based
service; you mail your 36 images and receive a HardCopy in the mail ($40
for a single copy, $20 for each additional one) In a few months, the
company expects to sell the software and lenses so customers can make
HardCopies at their desktops.
