Dana, welcome back!  Thanks for the report.

Did you remeber to switch the A/R dial to R (for "Rewind") before
attempting to rewind?  If you did, then the center sprocket wheel
should turn freely and I don't see why there should be any resistance.
So, something must be wrong with the camera.  On the other hand, if
you did not switch to R then you might have torn the sprockets off
the film you tried to rewind.  

In any case, perhaps some repair work is needed here.  I hope everything 
turns out well with the rolls you already shot.
