field of view of the camera? Especially when using binoculars,
with 4x magnification, I would expect the field of view to be
very different.
So, I gave up this idea. I understand that certain RBT cameras
have a stereo viewfinder (and so do some twin camera contraptions.)
I have looked through an RBT stereo viewfinder but was not
particularly impressed with what I saw. Any comments from people
with stereo viewfinders? Does that help in stereo composition?

Only if you have the stereo window set correctly in the viewfinder - and that
takes some doing! I have a SteRicoh 500 (siamesed Ricoh 500G cameras) that has
such a thing. I designed it for European format, so it was possible to arrange
the masks in the viewfinders (they're negative images of the bright line that
you see in the viwfinder) so they outlined the window. It's pretty accurate,
but not perfect, but it does allow you to see when something comes "through
the window"...
