Personally, I would prefer a camera that is in near-mint condition. 
This would indicate to me that the person who used it probably took
pretty good care of it and that I would be getting a camera that works.

Of course, as others have said, a camera in mint condition may have
stickey shutters or other problems resulting from sitting around unused.

Besides, if I get a good looking camera, as opposed to a "beater", than
my wife won't say... "you paid HOW MUCH for that piece of junk?!"

Still, I would also trust those on this list to be upfront and honest
about any equipment they may have for sale.  And if I were looking and
George were selling a beat up Realist with his usual guarantees, I'd
take it.  I could always use it as a defense weapon :-)
