I just got back from an Art sale. This was in a gallery in D.C. One of
my friends was one of the exhibiting artist there so that is how I knew
about it. Anyway, there was an artist there selling - can you guess? -
Stereo art!!!! When I walked over and saw that it had to do with
stereo, I said to the artist-"I have something to show you" and
proceeded to reach into my black shoulder bag while he looked on
nervously. I pulled out my Realist and he smiled (relieved-glad that I
wasn't some wacko who might be offended by his art). I asked him if he
knew what my camera was and he did say stereo although he asked
specifically if it were a Realist or a Kodak. He told me he had a
Realist although now he was making stereo pictures with a pin hole
camera. On display he had a viewers made of different types of wood
(part of the art). These were long bars with a picture facing inwards
at either end. Right in the middle were two mirrors at an angle. He
told me some of the mirrors were regular mirrors which he likes best
since they are easier to care for. He also uses first surface mirrors
(I hope I got that right) but said you can't clean them. You would hold
the whole contraption up to your face (there was a nose indentation
carved into the middle) and view the stereo image. Almost all were hand
colored. He hand colors photos every morning to relax. The artist name
is Bruce McKaig. He told me the Smithsonian had purchased some of his
viewers with the images and some are in the collection of The Carnavalet
Museum in Paris, France.
He sells his work for around $125. It's nice to know that some museums
see these worthy to add to their collections. Yay! for the Smithsonian
(my favorite btw).
