Now I realize what Tony means here... There is slop, meaning that
the chips do not fit tight but they can be moved up and down or
sideways. That is correct. But by always pushing them, say down,
you align them vertically. By freeviewing or making small
adjustments while looking at a viewer, you can can adjust the
horizontal spacing (stereo window) - assuming that you do not
aim for constant infinity separation mounting. And, finally, there
are the RBT mounts that have no up or down slop but only horizontal
movement freedom.
Any way I see this, there is little to no need for a mounting
gauge in most normal situtations, IMO.
