Although our shooting styles vary quite a bit, I'm still not sure
why you take off the cases when you go out (exactly opposite of
my method where the unused stereo cameras become display pieces
when not being used :-).
Maybe some do block the controls or the like, but none of mine
seem to. And there's a LOT more dust outside than inside (at
least with my house and area). At least when it stops raining.
Which it's rumoured to do occasionally. Eventually. Some day.
I hope.

P.S. - When I want to take a pile of junque (flashes, etc)
I'll put them into my car which usually is
nearby so I can fetch'em if need be, or I put them into
my backpack. But, I like to minimize the stuff being lugged
around, this allows me to indeed "snapshot" things a lot
more because I'll almost always have a camera around. If
I had to have a twenty pound sack of things to be
carried around in order to take photos, I'd be taking a
lot fewer pictures. About the "worst" I'll do is to put
a camera on my monopod and walk around with it laying on my
shoulder. That's about as heavy a lug-load I want to endure
for an extended period.
P.P.S. - I'm not into "scenics", so subject may make a difference too.
I'll not be "sitting" in one place taking lots of images, so
the junque would be on the shoulder being lugged around most of
the time.
