P3D Re: A Beginner's Kit, Reconsidered

"Ah, me!" said a small, chastised voice from the Beginners' Corner,
"Will no one take pity on a fumbling fellow who's jumped into the deep
saddle soup, so far over his head?"

Paul Talbot is quite right that it is very naughty to distort a
fellow's meaning by selective quoting, intentionally or not. And I
didn't mean my "Whoa, Nelly!" letter to sound quite so smarty-pants
ungrateful as I see it did, on reflection. I was trying to be cute
while trying to clarify my question. I accomplished neither.

So let me play this one straight. I had been thinking about my first
couple of years as a stereo photographer, and it occurred to me that
there had been a number of moments of epiphany when a particular
resource landed in my lap, a particular rule of thumb, a condensed
list (often courtesy of Dr. T or some other member of this list) that
as a beginner really helped me cut through the "drinking through the
fire hose" effect of tapping into all the different 3D treasures that
are out there. The best way I can describe those points is that
something in my brain went "Wow! Thank goodness I found this
particular information at this time and in such an accesible form.
This nagging problem/confusing principle/seemingly obtainable tool is
now in my hands."

The list I put in my original post came quite quickly to me. I also
have bought and read and used a lot of OTHER things which are terrific
to have, but those in the list stood out in my short experience for
their clarity, economy, or some other salient characteristic. They
were relatively cheap, readily available, fundamentally sound. These
are the things that I think a beginner is very grateful for, in the
rush of high-tech, fancy math, nifty toy bounty that make this such a
wide ranging discussion group. And I think that when the discussion
turns to distilling that water gushing from the "fire hose", from time
to time, you may not know how happy you make some of the silent,
lurking beginners on this list. I was just trying to say something
like that, and invite some selective reflection from those who have
been there.

I didn't slight Photo-3D, by the way, in my original list. It was
implied - I guess I felt it was too obvious to mention, since four of
the items on my list came to me from Photo-3D. And if you look back,
I did mention the Red Button Viewer, without modification. (I'm
waiting to modify it myself after Dr. T's book comes out!) Storage,
$3 viewers, and the various small items needed in this hobby were
encompassed in my reference to Reel 3D, or so I intended.

At any rate thanks for the feedback. I will wait awhile for that RBT,
Greg. ;-)

Re-lurkung for now,

Bruce.
