P3D stereo tv/computer

This is probably a very simple question to those who know but since I
don't I'll ask it . . . why can't or don't tv or computer systems use
polarizing filters in the viewing system rather than red/blue anaglyph
or shutter glasses?  I would think this would yield the cheapest and
easiest results still superior to anaglyph.

So, what gives?
