P3D Club Projection

>>>John R. wrote (in response to Dr. T.): Having that policy at your
Ohio club doesn't discourage me at all. Your attempt to intimidate PSSP
into enforcing that policy doesn't discourage me unless it
succeeds.<<<

Rest assured, John, that although I will be putting in a recommendation
to have "no adjustment" projection, I will be looking out for the
interests of the novices overall. I have several ideas (all of which may
be bombed) that may please *almost* everyone (remember the debate on
dues!).

>>>The reason is that I'm unlikely ever to see my slides projected
unless they're entered in a competition. I fully expect to mess up at
least the first few times, in terms of "projection quality" mounting,
and when my (very possibly) badly mounted slides show up on the screen,
I'd at least like to see if proper adjustment would make them worthwhile
- to have at least a chance for a little positive feedback, rather than
just a loud chorus of "boos". I've encountered (non-photographic) clubs
where beginners were deliberately
discouraged by setting the initial goals unreasonably high, and I
wouldn't like to see it happen accidentally in a stereo photography
club.<<<

Don't forget that there is a "Show-n-Tell" segment at the end of the
evening. This is a perfect opportunity to put your slides up on the
screen and get feedback. This portion of the evening is to share
anything - new techniques, travel shots, experiments, etc. If it makes
you feel any better, PSSP is the only place I see my images projected,
too; usually in the competition. For PSA competitions, I'm sending off
images that I haven't even seen projected. That's why I found it was so
important to learn good mounting techniques right from the start. I look
forward to seeing your images next year! {:>)

>>>I don't need public humiliation to know that I do not know (as yet)
how to mount slides for projection. I know how to mount prints, and how
to mount slides in slip-in cardboard mounts, and I can just enjoy them
myself using viewers. I'm intrigued by the notion of projection, and
hope to give it a try, but not if the bar is raised too high right from
the start.<<<

Be a duck! Just let that kind of talk roll right off your back. I have
seen a lot of "masters" who seem to forget how hard or intimidating it
was to start something new. Poo to them! There's always people like me
who stick up for the novices and listen to the requests, suggestions and
comments. Sometimes there's a fine line between raising the standards
and putting them out of sight. We should all encourage novices to
"stretch," but let's not "break" them!
