That should have been "spirit".  The 1948 book was just one year after
the introduction of the Realist.  McKay reflects the "Pre-Realist"
spirit.  The 1953 was at the peak of Realist photography.  McKay had
converted to Realist and he describes well the enthusiasm of the
amateur photographers for the new medium.
