I appreciate what Boris is trying to do: sell slides. Nudes are
certainly a traditional market for higher priced and higher quality
images. Photos of tourist spots and the like were covered by
ViewMaster. I feel that these tiny slides gave people the wrong idea
about stereo in general; that it was only a toy. The Realist is so much
better and I am sure that twin 8"x10"s are probably the best yet.
The problem that I have found is that a good display system (viewer,
projector, autostereoscopic device) costs a great deal. Like the
monitor that you are using now.
I have sold copies of my Realist slides. The Copper Lasers shot on my
home page( http://home.pacbell.net/toeppen/CVLs.html ), stuff like
that. It was a great deal of work and it was subsidized heavily by my
time. I did all of my own copy and mounting work. Slides cost me $2
each and I sold them for $4. Now I publish 321 images on a CD where
the images retail for less than $0.10 per image It is still work to
get images in into JPS. And it is not as good as the Realist viewer.
But boy, it is a big image and it is pretty darn sharp (check out :
http://home.pacbell.net/toeppen/amber.html) but such files are large.
On a CD there is no problem with 500K jps compressed from 6M bmps.
I believe that the jps CD format will be one of the better ways to
market images. At least when people learn again about stereo on the web
they may want film copies.... or even originals!
I am looking into tourist markets for my CDs, Science & Nature Stores,
etc.
I am already selling my CDs but in a rather limited way, so far. I hope
to reach a larger market than I could with film.
Dan's CD was a labor of love and dedication. And a fine collection of
images in a variety of formats. And, from time to time while looking at
the images, I feel like I am surfing on the web. Not downloading,
surfing!
I would hope that other avid stereo photographers would start scanning
in their collections so that we can get stunning full screen high
resolution images in 3D on our PCs through CDs.
I wish that others would use the JPS format in general. Then we could
really surf!
Hey Boris, maybe we could split the cost of a stamping? Would this
appeal to anyone else? Or maybe include some sampler images on mine
when (if) the market volume justifies stamping?
