Linux users (I think there are a few on this list) will also notice that
many of the links which resolve correctly on Windows (in my case,
specifically Windows NT 4.0 Workstation), will not resolve on Linux.
The reason appears to be that something on NT (not sure if it's Internet
Explorer or NT) is clever enough to look for *both* the extended name in
a link, *and* the MS-DOS equivalent. It seems that some of the long
names in the HTML code didn't get converted, but MSIE finds the file
just the same under the MSDOS name. On Linux, Netscape simply complains
that it can't find the file named in the HTML code. Of course one can
still browse the images directly, and it's not difficult to figure out
the mapping.
