     Unless the projection room had a flat black decorating scheme or was
quite large, there *was* an ambient light issue.

     Light spill from the projector(some worse than others) will reflect off
the walls, etc.
     Even if exterior light and projector light spills are well controlled,
there's a lot(one hopes) of light reflected off the screen! The typical white
"living room" will reflect this light quite well.
