I know this has been discussed before on the list but,
in response to Rob's question:

The TDC Vivid brings the lenses together while still keeping
15 sprockets of film between the lenses. This is accomplished
by maintaining the distance the film travels. A sprocket wheel
guides the film through an indentation between the lenses.
The shortest distance between two points it aint. I used this
technique to bring the lenses together when I merged a couple
of Argus C-3 bricks into a full frame stereo camera.

I love the TDC Vivid, but mostly it sits on the shelf. I'm
afraid I'll scratch it.
