P3D Re: Stereo Base Cheese

I'm a bit pinched for time, so here is a short (for me) summary of
thoughts.
Michael G. - Yes, the Spicer/Bercovitz article you mentioned is the
one I was trying to remember. They present the most general method of
base calculation, then 3 "special cases", one of which is 1:30 - and
compare them for similarity of base outcomes, given different focal
lengths and near-point distances. They also explain how the general
formula was derived - not really that hard to follow, with high school
trig and algebra. It really seems the best overview to date, and
originated on P3D, which should surprise no one.
Andrea's "where to measure from" issue. Yes, the answers she got are
apparently contradictory, and this with the different formulae shows
the way that beginners may get frightened away. This apparent lack of
unanimity isn't crucial though, for the beginner, since it is so easy
to get results close enough for enjoyment. There are good reasons for
the differences, I think. You have to have the general solution, the
rule of thumb, the method optimizing DOF, the exceptions for varied
taste, etc. Just like having recipes for pizza made from scratch all
the way to microwavable frozen jobs. The more versions you know, the
more tools in your toolbox, I figure. I am also unsure of my memory
on my own tabletop trial, on reflection. If I want to be scientific,
I'd better start taking notes. The object I was shooting may well
have looked better from a near human-eyed view, rather than from the
mouse-eye view (see Grant Campos's comments in Digest 2883 regarding
apparent size of subject.)
By the way, I like math - but I don't let it make my artistic
decisions for me. As Humpty Dumpty said: "The question is which is
to be master - that's all."
