If anyone finds a math that works (that is not too terribly
complicated), I am receptive to at least taking a look. I get the gist
by talking with David Lee and others, that the base for macro changes
dramatically depending on the distance to the subject. The lens focal
length has nothing to do with it, as I learned from -one of the masters-
David Lee. The 1/30 base is calculated using a standard lens for the
camera format you use. When you change lenses (i.e. focal lengths).
there is another formula added to adjust the stereo base for the new
lens. Just like DOF changes from *standard* distances to macro. At a
*standard* distance DOF is roughly 1/3 in front of the focused point
(technical term?) and 2/3 behind it. According to David, it changes to
roughly 1/2 and 1/2 (not the dairy product) when you are doing macro.
This is extremely helpful when using hyperfocal distance settings.
I like David's simple calculation using 4 images. IMHO if you try to
narrow it down with a formula so you only have to take two shots, you
lose the creativity. Every shot at a certain distance from the end of
the lens to the subject would be at the same stereo base. That's no fun!
Different subjects demand, or at the very least deserve, to be viewed at
different stereo bases. What does well for a flower may not give the
best effect for a spider. Even if there was a relatively simple formula,
I think I would still shoot more than two shots, just for the latitude
in effect.
Of course, if I had gotten that Macro Realist...

Is this a pun?
