While "don't worry, shoot happy" is a good way to avoid math anxiety,
it does have at least two possible drawbacks that I have noticed.

It uses up more film for each resulting pair.  (At least if we assume
that a base formula would get the results you want on your first and
only try.  Is that really what math promises?  Or is it really just to
get you in the "ballpark" so you're not spacing totally blind?) 

If you are shooting negatives, you have to carefully note which
negative generated which print before trying pairs, and make sure to
note the image numbers of the pair you finally decide to use, that is
if you ever want to print it again.

In defense of math, it's really only used in shooting situations where
you have time to pre-meditate - planned hyper or hypo shots which
unfold at a deliberate pace.  So it's not like you're missing shots
while consulting your table or calculator.  And you can gradually
learn to quantify the results you like in various situations, so you
can reproduce the effect reliably in the future.

So I believe at this time.
