There is indeed macro math that works.
The exact formula to calculate camera separation can be found in the
photo-3d archives. There are also spreadsheets which utilize this formula.
You must plug in six or seven measurements, but it works for all
situations, including macros.
The 1/30 rule is a generalization based on several assumptions. When one
of the assumptions is wrong, the 1/30 rule doesn't work. One assumption is
that the farthest point in your photo is at infinity. That assumption
works fine for most outdoors shots, but obviously not for macros.
The 1/30 rule is a rule-of-thumb for ordinary situations. For less common
situations like macros, you need to guess, waste film, or do the complex
math.
