P3D Flamin' Bumblees, George!
George, just a gol' darn minute!
Bob Maxey points out ("At the risk of getting Flamed or even Char
Broiled"), that the bumblebee, by all aerodynamic rights, should not be
able to fly, and with a good P-3D-like listserv group, it would cease
to. Excellent, gentle use of parody/metaphor relative to our flogging
math-based stereo base issues to death.
Andrea, who may be our group's most accomplished macro shooter
(certainly our most vocal, active and contributing) agrees, in her own
gentle way, that ignorance (of confounded stereo base math) is bliss,
she shoots, she gets results, and she's happy. She did cite your words
to provide stark contrast between the math side and the unworried, happy
shooter. And you nearly Flame and/or Char-Broil her with "So, if the
theory or formulas do not interest you, just skip the messages."
(Regarding my comment on Andrea as "accomplished macro shooter", I mean
this in a "regular, everyday, average" macro shooter scenario, which
does not include guys with access to industrial strength Scanning
Electron Microscopes.)
We have a diverse fabric of folks here in our community, we've got
different levels of intelligence, talent, accomplishment, and
experience. We are collectively new or old to the P-3D list, we are
young and old, some of us can afford to buy nice equipment, some wait
'till next payday to process that roll of 36. There are various levels
of sensitivity and a wide range and type of senses of humor. This truly
part of the richness and sense of community that the internet enables.
Seems to me that Maxey made a great commentary, Andrea agreed, using
your "depth of field equation and the stereoscopic deviation equation
are related to the inverse of distance" as a prime example of math-side
babble, in so doing did a good job of illustrating the contradictory
thinking we have here regarding stereo base. And you essentially told
her to keep it to herself!
Lighten up! Humor and gentle teasing are part of the P-3D tradition (as
well as in evidence among any group of good friends), and I'd hate to
see a playful comment suppressed for fear of getting flamed.
Respectfully,
Michael Georgoff
