P3D Re: Realist Macro

Seems there has been a lot of talk about the Realist Macro recently,
but not much about other cameras/methods. Is this because those
people asking are looking for a "collector" camera rather than a
"user"?

If you are interested in actually taking stereo macros and not just
looking at the equipment on your mantle then read on.

For the claimed $4000 to $6000 for a Realist Macro you could buy an
RBT and the Macro attachment. The "entry level" X4 is $2100 and the
"top of the line" X3 is $3250. The macro attachment is $2300. Unlike
the Realist which is solely dedicated to a fixed macro you get both a
"normal" stereo camera and an infinitely focusable and selectable
separation (6 or 11mm) macro with the RBT. Not to mention that the
RBT is full frame.

Want something cheaper? The de Wijs macro system is designed to fit
almost any 35mm camera. It produces half frame images just like the
Realist. It is available in six different distance/image area
configurations to suit your individual needs. This set up is
basically just like the Realist with its frame finding wires
extending out beyond the lens.

I have seen the final product from both of these systems as well as
that of the Realist Macro. The quality of the image of all is superb.
So it is basically a question of cost and features.

Of course the cheapest way to go is a single camera and slide bar.
This I know has been discussed in detail recently so I won't repeat.

You can get more information about both the RBT and the de Wijs from
Jon Golden at 3-D Concepts <www.stereoscopy.com/3d-concepts>

Disclaimers:

I am in no way affiliated with 3-D Concepts (ok, so Jon is a friend,
but I don't own any stock). Prices may vary. Handling and shipping
extra. Availability limited to stock on hand.

I must admit that I am the very happy owner of an RBT X3A and soon to
be a very ecstatic owner of the RBT Macro Attachment. Once I am I
would very much like to exchange slides, ideas, questions, and tips
on stereo macro photography with anyone who is interested. Please
drop me a line.

Thanks for the time,
