I've spend quite a few months on another list listening to various
offerings by Bob Salomon, and my impression is he niether get a lot of
it right, nor does he seem to pursued the craft in any meaningful way.
It seems to me that he is part marketer, part engineer, and non
photographer, so take this with a grain of salt.

I can offer you the practical, working formula which my vendors and I
use to output animation files to 4x5 on process cameras... roughly
4200-4500 spot/dots per inch gives the subjective impression of film
resolution at normal (roughly ortho) viewing distances. My guess is that
this would be a bit "light (low) is you were actually doing a controlled
test...
